Oceanhorn 2: Development Update

All the roads lead to Capital

It has been too long since we gave you guys an update on the development of Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm. Well, all five of us have been focusing on the game, and when you're really concentrated on your work, the time flies!

Grand Core: The city sized machine in the heart of Capital.

It feels like it was only yesterday when we released our first gameplay video of Oceanhorn 2 and even let people play the game at Nordic Game, but the truth is it has been months! The reception of the gameplay video was awesome. We could not get enough of all the impressions from youtube and forums. The excitement of our audience really inspired us to work harder.  After we came back to our studio, we were determined to move to the next step with the production!

Capital's seedier backside

So, what have we been up to? We have been building an adventure! More gameplay, more story, more levels, more worlds. A city. Capital is one of the central locations of Oceanhorn 2's story and it offers tons of open-ended exploration for curious adventurers. In the heart of the city is the gigantic machine Grand Core.

Meeting with friends at Master Mayfair's penthouse study

We hope to bring you more updates in the future, along with some video teasers to give you a real good look at the game! Productions like this require a lot of time and effort, but the outcome will be a cool video game so it is all worth the trouble! When you are making your dream project, you don't count the hours.

Enjoy these iPhone screenshots folks!

Arium Create RPG, Sample Of World Building

The concept of an RPG being able to support any world you want to create isn't really anything new. What has sparked interest and questions back to me has been about how does the system really work. Because of conversations I've had, I got a group of five additional players, four of which were not part of the initial review process to see how they dealt with the concepts and what they came up with.

They had all seen the review I had written about Arium Create (link) and we had talked about it before we settled in at the table to create our shared world, our Arium. We reviewed the process as outlined before we put on our "creation" hats.

We went over the first step and determined what was out of bounds. This group is rather open and has a broad background base. The only things we said would be out of bounds for this Arium would be the use of gratuitous violence and sex.

We completed all of the rounds except the creation of items during the time we had in creating our world. And in each round of creation, discussion, collaboration, and voting we had at least a dozen to choose from in each round. As we progressed through each layer of creation, we decided to keep a few more aspects than maybe in a regular role-playing setting because most of the people in this group are writers and we decided we also want to use the Arium as a launching point for a collection of stories. We'll see how that comes together, and possibly even see if we can do more with them besides just sharing them around our little group.

So here are the Arium concepts we kept and then a more detailed presentation of what we talked about at the end of our session.

Universal

We narrowed our world down to a theme of crime families with magic.

Big Picture

We decided there is more than one crime syndicate and there is a war brewing between at least two of the organizations. Along with this brewing war was the additional fact these groups of underworld power are run by dragons.

Culture and Organizations

A major aspect of what is happening deals with the next generation of dragons who are coming of age. A problem is the dragons are not rare (Dragons? You mean fantasy-pigeons? was the concept as written). There is also a concern within the dragon community. There are purists who believe that only dragons of a pure blood line are acceptable, no cross breeds. This has led to separation of the different organizations and an attempt to remove the cross-breeds from dragon society.

And, although dragons are able to change their appearance so they can blend in, there is an organization devoted to hunting dragons and ridding the world of them.

Landmark

For our landmarks, we ended up on a broader scope and took in some concepts of the world, along with a couple of well-known singular locations.

The broader locations came down to three "places" that have designs specifically for dragons. In business towers around the world there are some that have the top floors secured so only dragons may enter. This is either done by magic, or bio-metrics. There are also large parks that have been cultivated in many cities with landscaping which blocks the view from the streets of the interior of the park. There are also locations for young dragons to practice their human forms in places of relative security doing activities they will need to learn when in the company, or view, of the lesser species.

The two specific locations are The Moldy Crow Inn and the Crimson Palace. The Moldy Crow Inn is a neutral territory. The Crimson Palace, also known as the Red Riot, is a popular night club that is operated by red dragons.

People

I am sure by this time you are already coming up with a character and where you would fall into this scenario. We ended up with 16 characters and based on our discussion, there were many more attempting to be a part of this scenario.

Instead of going through who we came up with, I'll leave it up to your imagination of who you would have populating this world.

The Final Roundup of Ideas

Here is a general view of the conclusions we arrived at.

In our current world there is a culture underneath the human societies that few know about. This culture may be considered the world of gangsters by some, and by others a controlling elite, or illuminati. What sets this sub-culture apart is it is controlled by dragons. Different races of dragons live in different parts of the world with their own cultural values that set them at odds with each other. These are not merely clans of dragons, they are organizations with many people involved, but the power rests within the families.

Part of the power that is available to the dragons, and their minions, is magic. It is an undefined measure that only a few people understand a bit about. This could be because in comparison to the dragons, humans have short lives and not the time to master the arcane arts.

Dragons must now only concern themselves with the other dragon clans. There is also an organization of humans that knows about dragons. The organization trains to identify and eliminate dragons from the Earth. But through the ages the dragons have been able to maintain their position of power and control. Many humans have found it is a capitalistic idea to work for and with the dragon clans.

Those working for the dragons help them to fit into the society and culture of humans. (The dragons most likely have another view of the role the people play.) Through the work of the humans and the wealth the dragons have been able to accumulate over their long lives, the dragons have been able to build on their places of power. They have used their wealth to secure homes, businesses, and places of relaxation for themselves. Places where only they can go due to the protections of magic, technology, and natural landscape.

The dragons advance their wealth by preying on the desires of humans in many forms. One example of such a place is the Crimson Palace, known by regulars as the Red Riot. This popular night club is a place to see and be seen in. It is where most aspiring humans of one type or another will frequent. It is a place of indulgences. It is a place where the Red Dragon Clan makes the rules, and enforces them. It is a place of many deals, both above board and below. But it is only one such place that is run by a dragon clan somewhere in almost every major city where humans seek to climb a social ladder.

But there is also a place more for dragons. Secreted away in and usually only known by humans in rumor is the Moldy Crow Inn. The name is an old name, but the place may not be. The Moldy Crow Inn is a place where dragons can go and maybe not set their troubles behind them, but at least know that no other dragon will act upon their desires of harming another within its walls. For dragons this is neutral ground that is maintained for a place of negotiation and respite.

Overall

This is what we were able to bring together in a short time of brainstorming and creating ideas. I am sure it is going to become more interesting as we bring forth the characters. There are many adventures to be had in this world. There are many stories to create and to share.

I hope you enjoyed the Arium Creation we came up with. I am interested in hearing what other worlds groups create.

Oceanhorn 2 Demo In Nordic Game 2017!

It is news time! Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm will make a gameplay debut with a playable demo in Nordic Game 2017!

If you are coming to Malmö, head to Epic Games' booth and come and see what we have in store for the new Oceanhorn game! So whether you're a fan, a journalist, a publisher or a fellow game developer – we would be delighted to give you a tour on our game and talk more about Oceanhorn 2.

Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm is a continuation to Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas, a million selling action RPG title released for iOS, Mac, Steam, PS4, Xbox One, Android and later this year for Nintendo Switch. Oceanhorn 2 is powered by the unrivaled Unreal Engine 4.

We could not be more excited about Nordic Game ourselves. In addition to Oceanhorn 2's big moment, Fumito Ueda is also going to be in Malmö! He is the mastermind behind Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian and we are big fans of his work. It seems like Action RPG's are only now starting to catch up what Shadow of the Colossus did 12 years ago. The carefully crafted spirit of his games and the brilliance of his game designs are a driving force for game developers like us.

Blimey, been a long time since I looked at this, lots has happened, both in life and in wargaming.
Anyway, I will be re-visiting this blog. Maybe not as much as I did seven (7!!) years ago, but I feel now it would be fun to do a bit from time to time.
The main reason for not keeping this blog up was that I'd pretty much run out of puff, so, hopefully now I should be able to capitalise on having had a long break to come up with a few things that some folk might be interested in.

MiSTer - The MAME Of FPGA Simulation Projects

MiSTer Fully Assembled (courtesy of MiSTer Github Wiki)
Why bother pricey FPGA simulation when there are so many excellent software emulators lying around?  The answer can be boiled down into one word : lag.  Lag is the most intractable problem with emulation and the most insidious.  Everything else, accuracy, ease of use, authenticity, a software emulator can accomplish.  But doing all that without added latency is a huge challenge and one which oftentimes cannot be met without some very expensive hardware.

An FPGA console is a modestly priced solution to lag.  FPGAs simulate original hardware at the logic level and can simulate multiple processes in parallel.  A software emulator must recreate a system alien to the hardware on which it is running and is essentially limited to processing multiple hardware events serially.  The most popular FPGA solution not made by Analogue is based on the DE-10 Nano FPGA development board.  This board is the key to the MiSTer project, a group of cores which simulate various video game consoles, computer systems and certain arcade machines under a common framework.  In this blog entry (or entries), I will dive into the world of MiSTer and discuss the aspects I like and dislike.

DSniff

"dsniff is a collection of tools for network auditing and penetration testing. dsniff, filesnarf, mailsnarf, msgsnarf, urlsnarf, and webspy passively monitor a network for interesting data (passwords, e-mail, files, etc.). arpspoof, dnsspoof, and macof facilitate the interception of network traffic normally unavailable to an attacker (e.g, due to layer-2 switching). sshmitm and webmitm implement active monkey-in-the-middle attacks against redirected SSH and HTTPS sessions by exploiting weak bindings in ad-hoc PKI." read more...

COMMUNICATIONS

Letter from the Vice Chairman of the Board

Dear OWASP Community,

Two of the primary initiatives the foundation staff has been working on over the past few months were the two back to back Global AppSec Events in DC and Amsterdam.  This was a huge undertaking by everyone involved.  We are pleased to announce that the survey feed back is positive and both events were well attended.  I was in attendance of Global AppSec Amsterdam and it was great meeting and speaking with old friends and meeting new ones.  I would also like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the board to thank OWASP staff for their efforts in making the two conferences so successful.

To continuing on with the events theme; I'm really happy to announce the locations of our 2020 OWASP Global AppSec Conferences.  The first one will be June 15 - 19, 2020 in Dublin and the second will be October 19 - 23, 2020 in San Francisco.  Dublin is not an exotic trip for me, more of a 10 minute tram ride.  Hopefully you will join us, while also making the most of the culture and scenery that Ireland has to offer.

Last but not least, the OWASP Global Board of Directors election results where released Thursday October 17, 2019. I'd like to first thank everyone who has put their trust in me by voting me back onto the board for the next two years. I hope I do you justice.

I would also like to thank the large number of candidates that were willing to give of their personal time and run to be part of the Global OWASP Board.  This is a testament of the dedication and commitment of our members to continue to grow and evolve to the next level as an organization.  I encourage those that were not elected will still be involved in making a positive change by volunteering to be part of a committee.  The board and staff need all the help they can get to push through change. I hope you will join us in this journey.  We can not be successful without the help of the community.

Until next time,
Owen Pendlebury

PROJECTS

Projects were well-represented at the previous two Global AppSec conferences in DC and Amsterdam this past month.  Both events featured the popular Project Showcase and I heartily thank the leaders of the projects who participated:

Secure Medical Device Deployment Standard
Secure Coding Dojo
API Security Project
Dependency Check
SAMM
SEDATED
DefectDojo
Juice Shop
ModSecuity Core Rule Set
SecurityRAT
WebGoat

These leaders put on a great set of presentations and, in many cases, the room was standing room only.  Thank you!

The project reviews that were done in DC and Amsterdam are still being evaluated and worked on; if you are waiting on answers, please have patience.  I hope to have them finalized by November.

The website migration continues moving forward.  The process of adding users to the proper repositories is an on-going effort.  If you have not given your GitHub username, please drop by the Request for Leader Github Usernames form.  A nice-to-accomplish goal would be to have the projects and chapters in their new website homes within the next 30 days.
